Jude Bellingham has told of his delight at being serenaded by England fans with ‘Hey Jude’ and how he prefers older music.

The Three Lions superstar, who scored the winner in Sunday night’s match against Serbia, said he would try to “give back” the appreciation of thousands of fans singing the The Beatles classic with his performance on the pitch.

Bellingham,20,scored England’s only goal in the 1-0 win over Serbia with a header in the 13th minute – much to the delight of around 50,000 fans who had descended on Gelsenkirchen in western Germany.

Fans around the city have been singing the 1968 hit after expanding their repertoire of songs to cheer on England.

The Brummie midfielder was named Player of the Match at the end of England’s opener at Arena AufSchalke and, speaking after the game, told of his delight at the support.

“I listen to The Beatles a lot,” the Real Madrid star said. “My style of music is a bit old,so that’s right on my street.”

“I really enjoy playing in front of the England fans. It’s a different experience for me because obviously I play abroad.

“So when I can hear an English crowd for the first time every few months,I really enjoy it.”

He went on to say that he hoped his performance on the pitch would match the support from England fans.

“They give me a lot of appreciation,a lot of love. And I try to give that back with my performances and my energy on the pitch.

“I felt really confident coming into the game. I couldn’t wait to play such an amazing tournament alongside such an amazing group of players.

“So I think you could see that I was enjoying my football and wanted to make an impact.”

Bellingham and his midfield partner Trent Alexander-Arnold also dedicated a special moment of recognition to backroom staff.

“The celebration was from a game we play called “Wolf” and one of the staff always holds his face like that when he doesn’t know what’s going on

“So it was more a celebration for the backroom staff who put in so much work every day and they won’t receive any awards like this [his man of the match trophy] or get to have the moments we get to have on the pitch, but we value them so much and it’s important going through the tournament that we keep that atmosphere.”

Describing Bellingham’s performance, manager Gareth Southgate added: “He writes his own script. The timing of his runs. It was a super bit of play in the build-up of his play. I think all of our forward players looked really good.”

Hey Jude was released in August 1968 and was the top-selling single in the UK that year.
